In January, we practiced getting back into our routines after our winter break. Our themes we focused on were "Then and Now" and "Winter". We read the story "Long Ago or Today?" and compared things that people had and did in the past to things that we have and do today. We had so much fun in pretend play, cooking our food over the fire like people did long ago and cooking food in the oven like people do today. As we transitioned to learning about winter, we read "Counting in the Winter". Students learned about and created both polar bears and penguins. We talked about how our theme, "Then and Now" can apply to penguins - being in their egg "back then", hatching, and "now" being a penguin. We practiced counting different winter objects and animals while also practicing identifying numbers 1-10. Students practiced identifying letters in their name and we met Golden Girl, Harry Hatman, and Imply Ink in Letterland. As we head into February, we will be learning about our needs and wants. We have started by reading and learning about chores that we can do to earn money to buy things we want.

 May Blog Throughout April we focused on distinguishing between plants and animals. We read "Plants and Animals on the Farm", "Same! Different?", and "Grow, Garden, Grow". Students practiced finding similarities and differences between various animals. We planted flowers outside and discussed the needs of a plant. Students  continued  recognizing  numerals and worked on using one-to-one correspondence to count objects. In May we will wrap up our school year by learning about geographical places on a map. Students will practice using a map while we go "camping" in pretend play. Students will work to identify different geographical places that people can go - mountains, beach, lake, park, forest, etc. We will read stories about these different geographical places and see how people in our stories use a map to locate places they go. January Blog We hope everyone had a great winter break! In December, we learned about holidays and traditions. We read the stories, "Holiday Traditions", "The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell", and "The Gingerbread Man". We practiced answering wh- questions, identifying objects, identifying traditions, putting objects "in", and sorting big and small as we read our stories. In pretend play, we had a tree set up that could be decorated and food to cook/bake as another tradition students could practice together. In Letterland we met Fire Fighter Fred and reviewed our previous Letterland friends. In math, we have continued practicing our counting, number identification, and shapes. In January, we will begin our winter theme while focusing on things people had in the past and what we have now.

April Blog Hope everyone had a great spring break! It is hard to believe that it is already the 4th quarter. It has been so fun to see everyone in class growing and progressing in their skills! During March, we focused on earth and space. We read stories about night and day, the earth, and learned about the different ways the earth moves. In math, we focused heavily on our shapes and locating them throughout our environment. Students made rocket ships and pizzas out of shapes. We also practiced using positional words to locate objects. In pretend play, students were able to practice being astronauts in our classroom space center. There were planets for students to practice identifying the attributes of, numbers to identify, and letters on our space station controls to also identify.
